HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
In August 1777, George Washington rented this home from the widow Moland. He made the Moland House his headquarters and commanded a Council of War. An estimated 11,000 troops camped in and around the area of the Moland House for 13 days in the summer of August 1777. The enemy, General Howe, had not been sited since the army sailed out of New York City in June 1777. General Washington invited 13 generals for a strategy meeting to determine their next course of action. Some of the generals in attendance were Major General Lord Sterling, Conway, Greene, Anthony Wayne, and Lafayette: Brigadier Generals Maxwell, Knox, Wayne, Muhlenberg, Weedon, Woodford, Scott, and Conway. Other officers were James Monroe, John Marshall, Charles Pinkney, Henry Lee, Benjamin Harrison, and Alexander Hamilton. Layfayette presented his papers for a commission to General Washington at the Moland House and participated in his first Council of War.
WHO IS BURIED THERE OF SIGNIFICANCE?
John and Catherine Moland are buried on the property. John and Catherine were owners of the Moland House. John was an important man in the province and was commissioned King's attorney in Pennsylvania and later in 1742 admitted to the Philadelphia bar. After John Moland died in 1761, the widow Catherine and her eight children lived on in the house. By the time of the American Revolution, Catherine was living alone at the Moland House. Her three daughters were living abroad, one son in the British army, one in the American army, and the other three sons had moved on to other places.
