This hooked rug has an unusual choice of motif and colors. Peacock feathers were popular in the Aesthetic movement coming out of England in the 1880s and 1890s, but this folky peacock is in his own quirky style—possibly chosen because of interest in the Arts and Crafts/Aesthetic interior design trend or possibly not. Hooked rugs were a very popular craft project at the turn of the century; many were made for the hearth and seem to have chosen darker colors to show less soot, but this one is unusually light and bright and it seems possible it was meant for elsewhere such as beside a bed. We do not have a lot of hooked rugs and would like to acquire more.
