The NSDAR awards multiple scholarships to students showing dedication to the pursuit of degrees in diverse disciplines including history, law, nursing, and education.

The DAR Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to qualified applicants regardless of race, religion, sex or national origin. All multi-year scholarships, typically renewable up to four years, must be for consecutive years of attendance at an accredited college or university in the United States. The ONLY exception is the American Indian Scholarship that is available for students pursuing vocational training.

Please read all information carefully.

All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter. (The only exception is the American Indian Scholarship.) Your state scholarship chairman will assist in locating the chapter nearest you. Please send a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope to obtain the name and address of your state scholarship chairman and an application for any of the following scholarships.

Because of the high volume of requests we only send the information by return mail in the prepaid envelopes. We are unable to respond to phone or fax inquiries. Any correspondence regarding scholarships received without the self-addressed, stamped envelope will be discarded.

Only applications completed correctly and submitted in one package will be considered. Incorrect applications or applications mailed to the incorrect address will be discarded. No records are returned. Do not submit a personal photo. If your records feature a photo, it must be fully covered. Only winners are notified by the National DAR Scholarship Chairman following the approval of a ruling by the Executive Committee of NSDAR.

Consecutive-year renewals do not require additional Executive Committee rulings, but do require that an official transcript be sent from the school to the Office of the Reporter General-Committee Services, NSDAR, 1776 D. Street NW, Washington DC 20006-5303 by July 1st of each year. Students are only eligible for one scholarship from NSDAR.

Awards are placed on deposit with the college or university; any unused portion shall be returned to the National Society. Awards are based on academic merit, commitment to the field of study and financial need. No affiliation with DAR is necessary unless specified. The National Chairman, must receive all applications by the deadline indicated for each specific scholarship.

The following scholarships are available in the areas of political science, history, government, and economics:

Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger
American History Scholarship

The Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship is awarded to graduating high school students who will pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History and American Government. This award is intended to promote the study of our counrty's history among our finest students. U.S. Citizens residing abroad may apply through a Units Overseas Chapter.

The Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship is an award of $2,000 each year for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal.

Deadline: February 15, to National Chairman, DAR Scholarships.

Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship

The Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior or senior enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States who is pursuing a major in either political science, history, government, or economics. This is a one-time award in the amount of $1,000.

Deadline: February 15.

J.E. Caldwell Centennial Scholarship

J.E. Caldwell Centennial Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students pursuing a course of graduate study in the field of historic preservation. This award has been made possible through J.E. Caldwell & Co., official jewelers of the NSDAR in honor of the DAR Centennial. This scholarship is funded directly by Caldwell and is awarded during Continental Congress. This is a one time award in the amount of $2,000.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

The following scholarships are one-time awards of $1000. Only one properly submitted application is necessary for consideration for any award in this group or for the Madeline Picket Halbert Cogswell Nursing Scholarship listed under Special Scholarships.

Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship

The Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship is awarded to students who are in financial need and are accepted and enrolled into an accredited school of nursing.

Deadline: February 15.

Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship

The Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship is awarded to students who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. Preference will be given to candidates from the greater Lowell, MA area.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Occupational/Physical Therapy Scholarship

The Occupational/Physical Therapy Scholarship is awarded to students who are in financial need and have been accepted or are attending an accredited school of occupational therapy (including art, music, or physical therapy).

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

These awards are in the amount of up to $5,000 annually for up to four years, with a maximum of $20,000 total. These awards are available only in consecutive four-year increments. It is only necessary to submit one application for consideration for any award in this group.

Alice W. Rooke Scholarship

The Alice W. Rooke Scholarship is awarded to students who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school.

Deadline: April 15.

Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship

The Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students of high scholastic standing and character who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school.

This scholarship is also available to students who have been accepted into or who are pursing an approved course of study in the field of psychiatric nursing at the graduate level at accredited medical schools, colleges, or universities. There is a preference to females "if equally qualified".

Dr. Francis Anthony Beneventi Medical Scholarship

The Dr. Francis Anthony Beneventi Medical scholarship is a preferred amount up to $5000 awarded to students who have been accepted into or who are pursing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school, college of university.

The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.25. The scholarship is not automatically renewable; however, recipients may reapply for consideration each year for up to four consecutive years.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

The following scholarships have specific requirements for eligibility. Please read carefully:

Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship

The Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship awarded for up to four years to well qualified, deserving sons and daughters of members of the NSDAR for four years of college. Outstanding recipients pursuing graduate study may reapply each year for an additional period of up to four years of study. DAR Member Number of mother, who is a current dues paying member, must be on the application.

Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship

The Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship is awarded to students who are accepted or enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. Applicants must be members, descendents of members or be eligible for membership in NSDAR. DAR Member Number must be on the Application.

This is a one-time award of $1000.

Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship

The Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who has been accepted into the Harvey and Bernice Jones Learning Center, housing the Ben Caudle Learning Program at the University of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Arkansas. Applications must be requested directly through the Learning Center upon acceptance into this program for learning disabled students. This award is $1,000 annually for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal.

Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship

The Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship as a one-time preferred amount of up to $5000 which shall be given annually to a male or female music student who is pursuing an education in piano or voice. Special consideration shall be given to students currently attending the Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. A performance CD (compact disc) must be submitted with the application. This substantial scholarship is for one year, and is not automatically renewable; however, recipients may reapply for consideration each year, for four years based on maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Arthur Lockwood Beneventi Law Scholarship

The Arthur Lockwood Beneventi Law Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount $2,000 scholarship awarded to a student who is either enrolled in or attends an accredited law school and has a minimum GPA of 3.25. The scholarship is not automatically renewable; however, recipients may reapply for consideration each year.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Mary Elizabeth Lockwood Beneventi MBA Scholarship

The Mary Elizabeth Lockwood Beneventi MBA Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount $2,000 scholarship for a student attending graduate school full time in an accredited college or university and majoring in business administration. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.25. The scholarship is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration each year.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

William Robert Findley Graduate Chemistry Scholarship

The William Robert Findley Graduate Chemistry Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount $2,000 scholarship for a student attending graduate school full time in an accredited college or university and majoring in chemistry. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.25. The scholarship is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration each year.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Michael T. and Mary L. Cloyd Scholarship

A one-time only, preferred amount award of $3,000 to a student with a minimum 3.0 average at the third year level of undergraduate study or studying at the graduate level studying in the field of library science.

This scholarship will not be offered in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Edward G. and Helen A. Borgens Elementary and Secondary Teacher Education Scholarships

Two one-time, preferred amount awards of up to $1,500 for students twenty-five (25) years of age or older. One award is given to students studying to teach at the elementary school level, the other to students studying to teach at the secondary level. All applicants must have at least a 3.50 GPA, be at least a college sophomore, and attend or plan on attending an accredited college or university. The award is based on academic merit and is not automatically renewable; however, recipients may reapply for consideration as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.

The following NSDAR sponsored scholarships are awarded through specific DAR high schools:

The Idamae Cox Otis Memorial Scholarship (One to each awarded to an eligible Kate Duncan Smith and Tammassee student)
The Mildred Louise Brackney Scholarship (One to each awarded to an eligible Kate Duncan Smith and Tammassee student)
The Longman-Harris Scholarship (One awarded to an eligible Kate Duncan Smith Student)

The American Indians Committee of the DAR awards this scholarship to Native Americans and is intended to help Native American students of any age, any tribe and in any state striving to get an education. All awards are judged based on financial need and academic achievement. Specify that you want information on the American Indian Scholarship when you send the self-addressed, stamped envelope for information.

This scholarship is intended to help Native American college/university and technical school students of any age, any tribe, in any state at the undergraduate or graduate level. Graduate students are eligible; however, undergraduate students are given preference.

Applicants must be Native Americans (proof of American Indian blood is required by letter or proof papers) in financial need and have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher. There will be no exceptions.

This is a one-time $1,000 award.

Deadline: April 1.

Frances Crawford Marvin American Indian Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded once a year to one student. A candidate for this scholarship must be enrolled full time at a 2- or 4- year college or university.

Applicants must be Native Americans and proof of American Indian blood is required by letter or proof papers. Students must demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. A recipient may reapply for this scholarship and be considered along with other members of the applicant pool.

The amount of scholarship is based on total return of the endowment, and may vary year to year.

Anne Trevarthen Memorial Scholarship

This one-time scholarship will be presented each April to a high-school senior who will be attending the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Eligible applicants must demonstrate a personal connection to American Indian culture and traditions, as well as evidence of personal commitment to celebrating diversity and to bridging differences between disparate groups.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate knowledge of and/or involvement with one of Virginia’s state-recognized Tribes. The amount of the scholarship is based on the annual return of the endowment, and may vary year to year.
