Group Visits to the DAR Library

Groups of researchers are encouraged to explore the wealth of information at the DAR Library, where they will have access to hundreds of thousands of American genealogical and historical manuscripts and publications. Individuals planning a research trip to the Library may wish to check with local, state or national genealogical societies about participation in possible group visits to Washington, D.C. that these groups might sponsor.

When planning your group's visit please follow these guidelines for the DAR Library. Other research centers in the city will have similar requirements, but it is best to check with each for details, especially any relating to security considerations.

  • All calls regarding visits by groups of over five people should be made to the DAR Library at (202) 879-3229. Please provide your name and telephone number or that of the group's leader as a contact in the event we need to call someone.

  • Schedule your group's visit as far in advance as possible. This allows us to reserve the day you choose or to notify you of conflicts. The Library Office maintains a calendar just for group visits. Groups may not visit during the week before or the week of the annual NSDARContinental Congress, which falls in late June or early July. DAR observes most federal government holidays. Give yourself plenty of time to adjust schedules.

  • Please let the Library know what time you expect to arrive. The staff will give an orientation to the Library, if the group requests one, when all group members are present.

  • The best days for group visits are Tuesdays through Thursdays, but Mondays and Friday can certainly be scheduled. We prefer not to have large group visits on Saturdays. The Library can be extremely crowded on Saturdays and space is very limited. Orientations cannot be given on Saturdays. DAR is closed on Sundays.

  • The entrance fee for non-members is $6.00 per day. There are no group fees or reductions for more than one day. If you have a large group, it is helpful for the person leading the group to collect the entrance fees from non-DAR members prior to arrival. Present the collected fees to the Library staff member at the reference desk. This prevents long lines when entering the Library. A check for the total is also acceptable, made payable to "Treasurer General, NSDAR."

  • All visitors to NSDAR Headquarters will be subject to security screenings. Bags, packages and briefcases are subject to inspection on entering and leaving the building.

  • All members of the group must wear some type of name badge. Groups members do not sign-in individually at the D Street entrance guard's desk, but everyone in the group must wear either a group name badge or a DAR Visitor's badge while visiting the building. We do ask that everyone sign-in at the Library's register for statistical reasons. Please be sure that all of your members bring a photo ID with them to Washington. This is required for admission to many buildings, including the Department of the Interior, where the closest cafeteria is located.

  • Should your plans change and you need either to shift your visit or cancel it please let us know.

  • The Library can provide your group with pamphlets and other information sheets in advance to help prepare for your visit. Please state the number of copies you will need, and we will gladly send the appropriate material in advance for distribution to your group.
